The Village
The village of Lefkara is situated at an altitude south – easterly
of Troodos mountain, between Larnaca and Limassol. It could be said
that Lefkara is situated in the heart of Cyprus,
since it is located at a distance of 50 km away from Nicosia, 35 km
from Larnaca and 55km from Limassol.
Many other picturesque communities are located in the surrounding area
of Lefkara, such as Tochni, Skarinou, Kato Drys where someone can visit
the monastery of Agios Minas. AlsoVavla, Ora, Meline, Odou are beautiful
villages very near Lefkara. Leaving Lefkara and heading towards a higher
altitude someone finds the picturesque village of Vavatsinia or Agious
Vavatsinias.
The dry and healthy climate, the hospitality of people of Lefkara the
rare beauty of the landscape and the tradition of the embroidery craft,
are only some of the reasons that attract thousands of people from all
around the world to visit Lefkara.
Taking long walks into the heart of nature can become an unforgettable
experience for the Lefkara visitor. Following the path of nature one
can reach the village of Kato Drys. Fishing can also be enjoyed, since
two of the biggest dams of Cyprus are located a very short distance
from the village. It is also important to be said that though someone
lives actually up in the mountains in perfect climate conditions, can
also dive in to the sea after 10 minutes driving. The village took its
name from the limestone rocks of the region (Lefka ori – White
mounts - Lefkara). The houses in Lefkara (Redbluedoor), built in traditional architectural
style, are always clad with the traditional Lefkara stone which, along
with the clay tiled roofs, give a distinctive look.
Historical sources reveal that the various conquerors of Cyprus had
left their traces in Lefkara. Under Venetian rule (1489 – 1570),
Lefkara became a tourist resort for the Venetian noblewomen who, according
to a historical version, taught the craft of embroidery (Lefkaritiko
lace) to the women of the village. It is believed that during this period,
the great painter Leonardo Da Vinci visited Lefkara and bought a large
tablecloth for the altar of the Milan Cathedral.
Lefkara, as a whole, represents a lively museum where the visitor can,
in every corner of the village, feel the experience of living in past
periods. By staying in Lefkara, visitors are given the opportunity to
live for a while in the gitonia (neighborhood) and the sokakia (narrow
streets) where women embroidering the Lefkaritiko lace and men have
their coffee in the coffee shops of the square in Lefkara. A visitor
has also the chance to visit the “Museum of Folklore Art”
and the “Cyprus Wax Museum” both in the heart of Lefkara
village.
Restaurants are always open to serve the traditional dish of the village
-Lefkaritiko Ttava and Cyprus meze.
In Lefkara there is also Police Station, Hospital and Fire Station.
